Kali’s Court:  A Restaurant Review

Ever heard of  a Bronzini?

Sounds like the ideal word for the game Balderdash or a few off-color jokes.  I, however, discovered the meaning: a species of fish also known as Mediterranean Sea Bass.

On a recent trip to Baltimore I  arranged to have dinner with a former college friend, one whom I hadn’t seen in about 15 years.  Leslie chose the restaurant: Kali’s Court in Fells Point, the wharf area of Baltimore. From the moment I arrived,  I couldn’t have been more pleased.

I valeted my car at the curb (a necessary service provided in this crowded district) and walked through an enchanted sidewalk garden.  Some fortunate diners were eating al fresco among hanging and potted ferns, large leaf philodendrons and votive candles that created an elegant, yet informal vibe.

The Dancing Avocado Kitchen, Daytona Beach

Breakfast at the Dancing Avocado Kitchen left me with happy feet. The restaurant swings with attitude and taps a lively beat. I feasted on the house specialty, an avocado, onion and cheddar Jack cheese omelet.  I’ve never considered adding avocado to eggs, but let me tell you, these two know how to tango. Now, I must also admit, when I tried to duplicate the recipe at home, mine performed a little dip.  Not nearly up to the scorecard taste of the original.

How Dreamland BBQ Got Its Name

There’s a little joint in Tuscaloosa, Alabama that seats just 68, but its reputation is known far and wide. Dreamland BBQ boasts the motto, “Ain’t nothing like ’em nowhere,” and I reckon that’s true.

I recently visited the place and met Jeannette Bishop, the current owner and daughter of now deceased originator John C. Bishop and his wife, Lilly.  The Bishop’s opened their establishment back in 1958.  You see, John had purchased the land and considered building a cafe and funeral home.  He figured if the food gave his patrons high blood pressure, he’d end up burying them. His wife flatly refused that notion, so John built the drive-thru rib joint. Wonder if the name came from his funereal plans or as Jeannette says, “God just whispered it into his ear.”
