Saintly Connections in Lamego, Portugal

I visited Lamego on the final day of my Viking cruise along the Douro River, called Portugal’s River of Gold. The production of wine has sustained the area for two thousand years and is considered its  golden currency.

A beautiful pilgrimage chapel rests atop a hill in Lamego fronted by a magnificent 684-step staircase. I encountered a nun in this chapel who guided me to treasures behind the main altar.
