The Strange Case of the 20 Nutmeg Recipe

Add 20 Nutmegs??

According to, a simple typo in a Swedish magazine led to four people being poisoned. Actually they developed symptoms like dizziness and headaches. Seems a recipe for apple cake was posted, and “Instead of calling for two pinches of nutmeg, it said 20 nutmeg nuts were needed.”

I happen to like nutmeg but a little goes a long way. I can’t imagine anyone grating 20 nutmegs and folding all that into a batter.

But, speaking of apple cake, here is one of my favorite recipes, a perfect seasonal treat.

Jewish Apple Cake

  • 3 cups unsifted flour
  • 2 & ½ cups sugar
  • 1 cup vegetable oil
  • 4 eggs
  • 1/3 cup orange juice
  • 2 Tbsp. vanilla
  • 3 tsp. baking powder
  • ½ tsp. salt
  • 6 very thinly sliced apples, no skin
  • 2 Tbsp cinnamon
  • 6 Tbsp. Sugar

  1. Mix together flour, sugar, oil, eggs, salt, orange juice, vanilla and baking powder to make the batter.
  2. In another bowl, mix the apples with the cinnamon and sugar.
  3. Pour half of the batter into a greased and floured tube or bundt pan,
  4. Top with half of the apple mixture.
  5. Repeat with remaining batter and top with apples.
  6. Bake at 350 degrees for 90-120 minutes, until top is crusty.
